[SPOILER] Secret Character Gameplay Suggestions

[SPOILER] Secret Character Gameplay Suggestions

Postby Blue66 » Mon Jun 14, 2010 11:29 pm

Hi guys!

My main goal for the first update of the game will be an improvement of the secret character gameplay. I didn't have much time to make his gameplay as awesome as it should be and I apologize for that. I've played a bit with him in the last time and I already have some ideas to improve his gameplay and make it more fun, but maybe some of you guys have some even better ideas to make him more fun ^^

Please feel free to make suggestions!
Thanks!

I really havent played him much but now that i finished iron maiden and the walkthrough ill start playing that mode, howvever i would like to recommend a platforming centered mode? I really enjoyed the Platrforming in this game and would love to have mroe of it, and perhaps it some bomb-jumps could be in it, i love bomb-jumping :) Anyway ima play some Scret Character mode.

Ok, i havent spent alot of time with the secret charcter but i have done about 5 missions now and i died 6 times on the first mission.

My list of Problems with this mode.

1. Powerful Enemys early on, The Enemys that are spawning are too strong for an uncharged pistol to kill.
2. No Powers immediatly. Starting with no orbs at all and the game sends you to places that are very hard without any powers.
3. seemingly random locations, random locations could be okay but some missions are really short while other are rather long, this is bad early on due to weapon, ammo, and health constaints.
4. Touching the person you are rescuing immediatly send you back to the mall, You should at least have to press up.

These are my biggest problem with this mode, im not sure what to say for suggestions other than just try to fix these things.

Also i was thinking that a boss rush mode for this game would be interesting, and to expand on this and my platforming mode earlier, possibly add time trial?

I've only played the secret character for around 1.5 to 2 hours so far, but I agree with the previous comments. I had to switch the difficulty mode down to Normal just to make any progress (conversely, I'm currently playing through the regular game on Iron Maiden without much trouble), because I just couldn't get through all the enemies with no shield, low HP, and the level 1 pistol. Once I managed to get the shield and a few other upgrades, it actually started to become too easy instead of too hard (although I'm not sure if that would still be the case if I were playing on a harder difficulty mode). Not sure what the best way to fix these issues would be, but at the very least it probably shouldn't be spawning the higher-end enemies from the start.

It would also be neat if there were different types of missions, instead of just "find a survivor in XXXX location" (at least that's the only type I've seen so far). Maybe some missions could send you to kill a super-powered version of one of the regular enemies somewhere. Other missions could send you to one of the boss fights from the regular game, with the boss's health scaled according to how many upgrades you've acquired so far. Or something.

Also, I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I just missed it, but I got a mission to find a survivor in the hell version of the desert and haven't been able to find him. I'm pretty sure I've looked everywhere I possibly can (the only place I can't check is across the green block bridge, because I don't have the bomb jump yet). This is the second time a mission sent me to this area, and the first time the survivor was easy to find (he was where the clip size upgrade used to be).

Unfortunately there is no way for me to change the method why harder zombies spawn in regular levels without completely changing the spawn method. Since Scythe is considered "story complete", it means that Scythe always has to fight the hard enemies in regular levels that contain story elements.

However, this could be changed in special areas only available for him - which leads me to this idea:

I was thinking about an Endless Mode kinda like in MegaMan 9 or 10. There would be about 30-36 different segments (MM9 has 34 on Endless Mode) and the game would randomly generate a "stage" where you have to complete 3-5 of those segments and maybe finish off a boss at the end to get a reward and return to the Mall. This would be an addition to the regular "go find a survivor somewhere" quests and would be always available through a portal in the Mall.

Good? Yes? No? Suggestions for this?

That does sound like fun, but again with the enemys in the beginning will make most players kinda give up on Scythe. We Need something to compensate for the extremely hard beginning that Scythe has to go through. Mabey start him off with a few Power Orbs or something. Also the only way i can really play as Scythe is to jsut basically grab 3 medkits asap and just run through the stages taking damage as i go, never really have to shoot cause ill jsut lose and g power i collect anyway so i dont see the point in even collecting power. I use my cash from missions to buy new medkits when i run low. I realize this isnt the fun or appropriate way to play scythe but its the only way i can play it without banging my head against the keyboard lol

Also on a side note the Scythe gameplay mode so far isnt really my cup of tea, i never feel like im accomplishing anything and without collectables it really hurts the game for me, Ive always enjoyed games where you collect alot of stuff. ( Metroid series, Zelda Series, Megaman Legends, ETC)

I agree. Right now Scythe isn't much fun, because there's not much to accomplish.

So how about if I change it so he starts off with all weapons + shield, but no G-Power and no Power Orbs. He still gets random rewards like Orbs, money or items like ammunition case or alternate fire modes, but it would be a lot easier to use him and play harder stages early on.

Additionally I will add some kind of mission points for completing random generated stages. This would be like in MegaMan Endless Mode, where you can brag about how many screens you've finished. For Scythe it would be how many random stage runs you've beat.

starting off with all weapons and shield does sound like a good idea, However if you do that the liftime of his Saving people missions will ruin short. In this case adding more modes for him (like that Endless mode) will be essential. And i do like the idea of the score system, however i do have 1 little problem, If you ever make the reason to play something or even part of the reason Score, then you need to be able to upload your scores to some kind of scoreboard with everyones scores. This adds the competetive factor and adds alot more fun into the game. This is also the reason i dont play the arcade mode, i dont see the point in getting a high score just for the sake of doing so.

Yes, I'm already planning an online high score. But this needs a lot of testing before I can release it. I will probably make a small beta test before releasing the 1.1 patch. The patch will include several fixes that I've already made, the endless stage mode for Scythe and the online highscore system for Arcade mode (maybe for Scythe too, not decided yet).

Btw I'm having a little fun while making the endless mode stages ^^

If you have any ideas of iconic platformer stages that I should add, please let me know.

LOL awsome, that stage is badass.. umm... my mind is drawing blanks at the satges sadly,

but i did think about something else you could think of adding:

Something like the Metroid escape scenes, mabey at the end of your endless stages after you kill the boss you have to escape for w/e reason. Sound like it would be fun to have to have to hurry, would at alot of intensity

also i volunteer for beta testing if you need someone else XD
